THE UGLY DUCKLING
“Different. Special. It’s just another way of saying ugly.”
Although it may often be thought of as no more than a one-dimensional, common children’s tale, The Ugly Duckling contains a core message that could be used to call attention to the great inequalities and fundamental issues in our world today. In a world currently full of so much hate, I think it is absolutely vital to produce work that spreads love and inclusivity- one that sends messages of acceptance, tolerance, and love to the influential young minds of our audiences. This story of the ugly duckling challenges us with real issues that need to be discussed, but does so in an environment in which our younger audiences can become a part of the conversation. The Ugly Duckling gives these audiences a meaningful, challenging story that they can connect with- a reality that they can relate to. The Ugly Duckling parallels a common story of humanity. For one reason or another we have all found ourselves feeling excluded, forgotten, and alone. We can all identify as the “ugly duckling” in one or more aspects of our life. In this production, we give both children and adults the permission to feel the loneliness they may be struggling with- to empathize with the ugly duckling. Children, in particular, are going through so many changes that they might not understand at the time. This show provides a beautiful opportunity to give young audiences a safe space to feel and explore these emotions through the lens of The Ugly Duckling story.

When Siggy, the Ugly Duckling, doesn't fit in with the other ducks, the Barnyard Brigade steps in to teach him how to get along in the real world. With the Brigade's help, Siggy takes on a variety of farm animal roles as he tries to find his place in the world. A fun and fresh retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's classic story.
